Consumer Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency

Home Energy Efficiency Improvement Tax Credits
Consumers who purchase and install specific products, such as energy-efficient windows, insulation, doors, roofs, and heating and cooling equipment in existing homes can receive a tax credit for 30% of the cost, up to $1,500, for improvements "placed in service" starting January 1, 2009, through December 31, 2010. See EnergyStar.gov for a complete summary of energy efficiency tax credits available to consumers.

Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credits
Consumers who install solar energy systems (including solar water heating and solar electric systems), small wind systems, geothermal heat pumps, and residential fuel cell and microturbine systems can receive a 30% tax credit for systems placed in service before December 31, 2016; the previous tax credit cap no longer applies.

Water Heater

What provisions are made for credits on water heaters?
A taxpayer can claim up to 30% of the costs incurred to purchase and install a natural gas, propane, or oil water heater “which has either an energy factor of at least 0.82 or a thermal efficiency of at least 90 percent”, or for a heat pump water heater with an EF of at least 2.0.

What are the limitations?
The total credit allowed for tax years 2009 and 2010 for a taxpayer is $1,500. This cap is determined by applying the 30% to the total of amounts paid or incurred for qualified energy improvements AND qualified energy property expenditures during the tax years 2009 and 2010.

  • It must be originally placed into service by the taxpayer claiming the credit.
  • Time limitations: The heater must be placed into service after February 17, 2009 and before January 1, 2011. Note: If it was installed between January 1, 2009, and February 16, 2009, it would be eligible for the $300 tax credit in effect under the provisions of the Energy Improvement and Extension Act (EIEA) of 2008. The credit allowed under the EIEA provisions was superseded by the ARRA provisions, upon enactment of ARRA.

Solar

Concentrating solar power technologies use reflective materials to concentrate the sun's heat energy, which ultimately drives a generator to produce electricity. Low-temperature solar collectors also absorb the sun's heat energy, but the heat is used directly for hot water or space heating for residential, commercial, and industrial facilities.

Solar Water Heating Systems
Collectors - SolarFlex - SolarCon - iSolar Solar thermal collectors are used to capture energy from the sun and efficiently transfer solar energy to heat the solar fluid in the primary circuits of solar heating systems. This heated solar fluid is circulated through a heat exchanger, thus heating domestic water, which is stored in suitable tank. This heated water is then delivered to a conventional water heater for final heating, if required, or direct use. For more infomation on Caleffi visit their website. | Web

Geothermal

Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth. It's clean and sustainable. Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a tax credit is available on certain geothermal equipment installations. To determine which equipment may qualify, see below under the "Tax Credit Certificate Instructions" and click on the link for a chart of eligible products.
